MDC-T recalls more councillors

by Municipal reporter

The opposition MDC-T led by Dr Thokozani Khupe has recalled nine more councillors from Mashonaland West Province as the feud within the embattled opposition camp rages on.

Three of the recalled councillors are from Chegutu while the other six are from Chinhoyi including Mayor Dyke Makumbi.

The development has since been communicated by Local Government Minister July Moyo to the respective municipalities in a letter dated 4 December 2020.

The recalled councillors from Chinhoyi are; Dyke Makumbi, Chinhoyi ward 12 Councillor and Mayor, his deputy Chipo Mlotshwa, ward 14,  Mukudzei Chigumbura ward 8, Brighton Mhizha ward 4, Richard Vhitirinyu ward 3, and Patricia Chibaya ward 2.

From Chegutu are; Rydes Machekera ward 2, Edward Dzeka ward 9, and Alois Kuhlande ward 11.

Chegutu Town Clerk Alex Mandingo has verbally informed the affected councillors of the development.

Makumbi who was Victoria Falls for the Annual Councillors Meeting refused to accept the news saying he will wait for a written correspondence from the responsible authority.

Minister Moyo already declared the positions as vacant in terms of section 278 (1) of the constitution of Zimbabwe as read with section 129 (1) (k) and has directed the councils to inform the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) about the vacancy.

The recalls come hard on the heels of other recalls in Bindura where former Mayor Carlos Tokyo and his deputy Nobert Dhokotera were also recalled. The elections to replace them were recently held where Brian Kembo and Tongai Jack from the MDC-Alliance won the posts of Mayor and deputy respectively. Ian Makone Junior, son to Ian Makone, was reportedly Chamisa’s pick, a move that was meant to appease the later who also failed to win the Harare mayoral race. Makone jnr got a nil.

MDC-T has to-date expelled more than 160 councillors and more than 30 House of Assembly members whose positions are yet to be filled as the feud within the opposition party continues.
