Kutsaga promotes eco-friendly float tray system for tobacco seedling production

The Tobacco Research Board (TRB), through Kutsaga Research Station, is encouraging farmers to adopt the float tray system a modern, efficient, and environmentally friendly way to grow tobacco seedlings.

Training and trials are already underway nationwide to help farmers improve seedling quality and boost productivity.

In an interview with this publication yesterday, TRB Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Frank Magama, said the float tray system is gaining popularity among farmers due to its economic and environmental advantages.

“The float tray system uses less water and fertiliser, produces more uniform seedlings, and allows for better disease control compared to traditional seedbeds. Weare encouraging farmers to adopt this system as it leads to improved seedling quality and higher yields in the field,” said Dr. Magama.

The float tray method involves sowing tobacco seeds in polystyrene trays that float on a nutrient-rich water solution.

This setup allows for more controlled growth and minimises the risk of diseases such as damping-off, which are common in conventional seedbeds.

Dr. Magama said over the years, uptake of the float tray system has grown steadily, with many commercial and smallholder farmers embracing the technology.

“In the past, many small-scale farmers were hesitant to adopt the system due to the cost of trays and lack of knowledge but through training and demonstration plots across the country, more farmers are now seeing the benefits and making the switch,” he said.

Kutsaga is working closely with the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development to promote the use of climate-smart technologies in tobacco farming, with the float tray system being a key component.

“We are committed to supporting farmers with research-based solutions that improve productivity while preserving the environment,” said Dr. Magama.

He added that Kutsaga continues to develop and supply disease-tolerant seed varieties, alongside promoting sustainable agronomic practices, to ensure the long-term viability of tobacco production in Zimbabwe.

The promotion of modern seedling systems like the float tray method is in line with the Government’s Vision 2030, which aims to transform agriculture through innovation and sustainable practices.

By equipping farmers with efficient, climate-friendly technologies, the TRB is contributing to national efforts to boost agricultural productivity and achieve an upper middle-income economy.
