The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) has acknowledged public concerns over the availability and accessibility of ZiG cash, especially in areas outside Harare, and assured citizens that measures are being implemented to address the issue.

In a statement released last Friday, RBZ Governor,Dr John Mushayavanhu said the usage of ZiG had significantly improved across the economy since its introduction.

He revealed that local currency settlements on the National Payment System rose from ZiG7.86 billion (26%) in April 2024 to ZiG56.8 billion (43%) by 30 May 2025.

“This upward trend in ZiG usage reflects growing confidence in the local currency, and we are encouraged by the increasing adoption by the public. As of 12 June 2025, total ZiG deposits in the economy stood at about ZiG 16 billion, of which over ZiG 207 million was in cash held by banks. This level of cash meets optimal requirements and is sufficient to support daily deposits and withdrawals by the public,” Dr Mushayavanhu said.

Dr Mushayavanhu emphasised that the RBZ has been working closely with banking institutions to improve access to physical ZiG cash.

“We have instituted measures, in collaboration with banks, to ensure wider availability and distribution of ZiG cash through banking halls and ATMs. Some banks have already made ZiG cash available via ATMs, while others are in the process of configuring their machines to do the same,” he said.

Addressing public anxiety about cash shortages, the Governor reassured citizens that there is no cause for alarm.

“There is enough ZiG, both in electronic and physical form, to meet the current and future needs of the economy. The Reserve Bank remains firmly committed to maintaining the prevailing price and currency stability and to safeguarding the purchasing power of ZiG at all costs,” he said.

He also highlighted the broader economic stability efforts by the Government, noting that currency and exchange rate stability, along with policy measures to promote use of the ZiG, are expected to drive even greater adoption of the local currency.

Meanwhile, Government urged the public to continue using ZiG confidently.
