Government has signed a concession agreement with Hena Concessions Company to upgrade and maintain the Harare-Nyamapanda Road and Nyamapanda Border Post, in a move expected to significantly boost regional trade and infrastructure development.
The Public-Private Partnership (PPP) deal was formalised yesterday by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Engineer Joy Pedzisai Makumbe, who described the project as a strategic intervention under the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1).
“This project is not just about roadworks. It is about connecting economies, creating jobs, and easing the movement of goods and people between Zimbabwe and the region.Through this partnership, we are tapping into private-sector efficiencies to transform critical infrastructure while ensuring value for money and long-term sustainability,” said Eng. Makumbe.
The development will involve the dualisation of key sections of the busy highway to ease congestion, the construction of a state-of-the-art toll plaza, and the complete modernisation of the Nyamapanda Border Post.
According to the ministry, these upgrades are aimed at improving road safety, travel time, and revenue collection from cross-border traffic.
Eng. Makumbe highlighted that the Nyamapanda route plays a vital role in trade and regional integration, particularly with countries to the northeast of Zimbabwe.
“We are confident that this initiative will enhance Zimbabwe’s competitiveness as a transit and trade corridor. It will also stimulate local enterprise and create employment opportunities during and after the construction phase,” she said.
Hena Concessions Company is expected to bring international expertise and capital to the table, with the government providing regulatory support and oversight throughout the duration of the concession.
While construction timelines and project specifics will be announced soon, the ministry appealed for patience and cooperation from the public as preparatory works begin.
“As Government, we remain committed to delivering safe, modern, and efficient road infrastructure. This is one of several projects we are undertaking to realise the goals of Vision 2030,” added Eng. Makumbe.
The Harare-Nyamapanda Road serves as a crucial artery for both local traffic and regional freight movement, linking Zimbabwe to Mozambique and beyond.
The upgrade is seen as a major step forward in enhancing trade facilitation and regional connectivity.
