Nelson Chamisa’s anticipated return to active politics is set to face significant headwinds, amid reports of discontent within his former opposition ranks over his alleged alliance with expelled Zanu PF member Blessed Geza.
Sources privy to the developments told this publication that Chamisa is on the verge of launching a new political outfit to be called the New Zimbabwe Movement, a party expected to be largely youth-driven and loyal to the charismatic former Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader.
However, the decision to rope in Geza as National Chairman of the yet-to-be-launched party is reportedly triggering internal friction and resistance from key former allies.
“The plan is almost done. Chamisa will unveil the New Zimbabwe Movement in the coming weeks. It will be a fresh platform centred on young people and a renewed vision for democratic transformation. But many of his former comrades are not on board—especially after learning that Blessed Geza will be given a senior leadership role,” said a well-placed source close to the consultations.
Geza, a controversial political figure who was recently expelled from Zanu PF for alleged indiscipline and factionalism, is a polarising choice for a top position in the new party. His presence has reportedly unsettled senior opposition figures who worked with Chamisa in the CCC and MDC formations.
According to the source, prominent figures, such as Job Sikhala, Tendai Biti, Charlton Hwende, and Karenyi Kore will not be part of the New Zimbabwe Movement, having distanced themselves from the emerging political project.
“Some feel betrayed. They believe Chamisa is abandoning the struggle’s core values by aligning with people like Geza. It’s a difficult balancing act for Chamisa. He wants fresh energy and new structures, but the political baggage of Geza is proving costly,” the source said.
The source confirmed that Gift Ostallos Siziba and Fadzayi Mahere are guaranteed key roles in the party, with both said to be playing advisory and mobilisation roles behind the scenes.
“Fadzayi is expected to deputise Chamisa, and Ostallos will be the secretary general,” the source revealed.
Efforts to get a comment from Chamisa were futile, as his mobile phone numbers were not reachable by the time of publication.
