Transport operators cash in on commuters

Transport operators are heftily cashing in on commuters following the recent upward increase of fuel price per litre by Government.

Information reaching Harare Post is that by yesterday, commuters were being charged as much as five dollars from Chitungwiza, Epworth and Ruwa to Harare. Those localised in Harare were being charged as much as three dollars for a single trip to town.

A reliable source spoke to Harare Post and said touts were taking advantage of the fuel increases by Government and demonstrations in Harare to increase transport fares.

“Touts are the reason behind commuter fare hikes. They are saying each person must pay the price of a litre of fuel for one trip. Some of the owners of the commuter omnibuses are not aware that these fares have been put to effect,” said the source.

Harare Post has learnt that touts are taking advantage of the recent price increase of fuel by Government to charge exorbitant fares. Commuters have been left with no option than to call for Government to intervene through providing public transport and freedom trains.

Government has also informed commuter bus operators not to increase their fares as it has put systems in place to provide subsidised fuel for their operations.
