Professor Jonathan Moyo has advised Nelson Chamisa to purge the individuals within his leadership team who are plotting to topple the MDC leader.

The Professor advised Chamisa to replace plotters with politically experienced G40 politicians. Chamisa appears to have accepted that advice. Prof Moyo, Dzikamai Mavhaire and Charlton Hwende would likely benefit from the purge and be elevated to the top leadership of the MDC.

Sources in the MDC have revealed that Nelson Chamisa now trusts Professor Moyo more than any of his lieutenants in the MDC. According to sources, Chamisa has been so impressed by Prof Moyo that he is now seriously considering him for the post of Vice President. The sources, who are very close to the MDC leader, observed that Chamisa no longer trusts Tendai Biti, Job Sikhala, Professor Welshman Ncube, Tabitha Khumalo and Morgan Komichi.

The distrust followed reports from the MDC leader’s spies which revealed the intentions of the aforementioned MDC leaders to remove Chamisa from the leadership of the MDC. Sikhala and others want Chamisa to go before 2023 elections as they believe that he has become an incompetent leader. This view is shared by MDC Youth leader, Obey Sithole. Others, including Biti are said to prefer to create conditions that would make Chamisa fail in order to justify a palace coup. They reason that if Chamisa loses in 2023, he would be unable to justify his continued occupation of the office of MDC president.

These developments may partly explain calls by Chamisa for some MDC leaders to leave the MDC as reported in the Daily News of 11 March 2020. Chamisa’s targets are Biti, Sikhala, Komichi, Mwonzora, Khumalo and Obey Sithole. Professor Moyo and Hwende would replace Prof Ncube and Biti, respectively. Khumalo and Sikhala are likely to be replaced by Mavhaire, Jeppy Jaboon or Shadreck Mashayamombe.
