Zvimba Rural District Council (ZRDC), has put in place risk mitigation measures to ensure that people from the district who will be visiting council offices and health care facilities in the district are protected from the coronavirus pandemic (Covid-19) which has so far claimed one person in the country.

A contact in the council revealed that in complementing Government efforts in the fight against coronavirus, they have procured disposable face masks, sanitizers, water buckets for council offices and other public areas and have since started awareness campaigns in all wards in the district.

“We are trying our best to prevent and control any real and potential outbreaks of the disease. We have since purchased 100 hand sanitizers, 10 boxes of latex gloves, 50 boxes of disposable face masks and six boxes of Dettol among other items. These will be distributed to all council offices in the district and we are also considering council clinics.

“We are also embarking on door to door awareness campaigns across the district where we are enforcing good hygiene practices. Most of our people here do not have access to social media and other communication channels like radios and televisions where updates and awareness campaigns are being posted, hence the need for these door to door programmes,” said the contact.

It was further revealed that the council was ensuring that all clinics in the district have nursing staff trained to cope with suspected cases.

The local authority has also banned public gatherings, ordered business to provide sanitisers, and reviewed the conduct of public sales.

Meanwhile, Government has appreciated the support being rendered by various stakeholders and partners in the fight against Covid-19 particularly China`s Alibaba Foundation that donated a consignment of commodities to help strengthen surveillance, laboratory testing and case management of Covid-19.

The first consignment consisting of 20 000 laboratory diagnostic kits, 10 000 medical face masks and 10 000 protective suites and face shields arrived at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport yesterday.
