MDC-A at weakest point- Chibaya

by Christopher Makaza

MDC-Alliance National Organising Secretary, Amos Chibaya has admitted that the beleaguered opposition outfit is currently at its weakest point amid massive defections of its members to the MDC-T led by Dr Thokozani Khupe.

Several MDC-Alliance legislators and councillors have since defected to the MDC-T.

At a meeting organised by MDC-Alliance National Organising department in Harare recently, Chibaya said the MDC-Alliance was undertaking a cleansing process in which real party supporters will remain. He accused ZANU-PF of creating the problems bedevilling the MDC-Alliance and assisting the Khupe faction to reclaim Morgan Richard Tsvangirai House (MRTH).

ZANU PF acting spokesperson, Patrick Chinamasa recently dismissed claims by the MDC-Alliance that the ruling party has a hand in the chaos dogging the opposition outfit.

“ZANU PF has nothing to do with the squabbles within the MDC Alliance. The squabbles emanate from disregard of their own constitution. The late (Morgan) Tsvangirai tore up a constitution to illegally appoint two vice presidents,” said Chinamasa.

Provincial representatives who also attended the meeting presented on the state of affairs in their respective provinces. All of them reported that there were serious defections to the MDC-T.

The Bulawayo provincial representative revealed that they were experiencing serious defections and their structures were in shambles.

The Harare representative noted that they had lost some Provincial Executives such as Provincial Secretary for Welfare, Silas Mhetu and Provincial Secretary for Finance Luckson Mukunguma to MDC-T. He also revealed that most councillors from Harare, Chitungwiza and Epworth were sitting on the fence

The Harare representative further noted that constituencies like Highfield East, Chitungwiza South, Harare East, Glenview South and Southerton also need urgent attention to prevent members from defecting to the MDC-T.

The Manicaland representative reported that Makoni Central, Nyanga South and Chipinge Constituencies were experiencing massive defections to the MDC-T. Former MDC-Alliance National Executive members Giles Mutsekwa and Joyce Makonya were reportedly undermining Chamisa.

MDC-Alliance members from Mashonaland Central Gift Chimanikire and the Provincial Youth Assembly Chair Tonderai Samhu were also reportedly undermining Chamisa`s leadership.

In Mashonaland East, former MDC-Alliance Provincial Assembly Chair, Piniel Denga and former MDC-Alliance member Brightness Magova reportedly defected to the MDC-T with their supporters.

Denga reportedly commands a huge following in Mashonaland East including members from Mbare constituency where he was once a legislator.

The Mashonaland West representative revealed that Chegutu, Kariba, Hurungwe West and Chinhoyi constituencies were also experiencing the same fate.

The massive exodus of MDC-Alliance members pressed a panic button within Chamisa`s camp prompting the organising department to conduct tours in all the country`s provinces to drum up support for Chamisa and plead with the members to stop the defections.
