Government has officially opened Gokwe Community Information Centre, this Friday, as it forges ahead with its drive to ensure rural communities access to information technology.

The commissioning coincided with the World Post Day, taking place at Gokwe Centre, whose purpose is set to bring awareness of the post’s role in the everyday lives of people and businesses, as well as its contribution to global social and economic development.

Speaking at the commemorations which kick-started with the commissioning of the Gokwe Community Information Centre by the Minister of Information Communication Technology, Jenfan Muswere who acknowledged the role played by postal services.

“I remember very well when we were growing up that we used to see the Postman going around delivering letters. Now, with Covid restrictions, I am informed that the postman is also delivering food and medicines. To me that shows that the Post is here to stay,” he said.

“2020 is the year the postal industry has shown the world its resilience, determination and the invaluable role it plays in every society...Life-saving medicines delivered, protective equipment provided and essential financial services maintained.”

The theme for this year’s event is, “More than Mail.”

“This is quite an apt theme considering that during this COVID–19 pandemic, the Posts are certainly delivering more than just mail. The Post in the near future will be the hub for e-government services,” added Dr Gift Machengete, the Postal & Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (POTRAZ) Director General.
