ZNA warns public of bogus soldiers

By Staff Reporter

The Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) has alerted the public of armed robbers who are robbing people while donning the ZNA uniform.

In a statement, the ZNA said the robbers who also masqueraded as officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), were using fake warrants to gain access into private properties.

“The Zimbabwe National Army would like to alert members of the public that a gang of armed robbers is on the prowl in Mashonaland West Province. The robbers are using the name of the ZNA and ZRP to dupe unsuspecting victims of their valuable properties. They gain access into private premises upon production of fake warrants,” reads the statement from ZNA.

The statement also said that the fake warrants were purportedly signed by the Commander Defence Forces.

The ZNA further informed that the gang, numbering between four and six, was moving around dressed in ZNA camouflage uniforms and others in civilian attire acting as CID police officers.

According to the ZNA statement, unsuspecting members of the public have been robbed and there have been a number of reports of such robberies in places like Chegutu, Kadoma, Chinhoyi, Christon Bank and Mazowe.

Cases of criminals purporting to be members of the ZNA are on the rise and recently the ZNA Director Public Relations, Colonel Alphious Makotore, warned members of the public, especially the business community to be wary of fraudsters masquerading as ZNA procurement officers.

The ZNA has since called on members of the public to immediately report suspicious characters pretending to be ZNA officers to the nearest police station or  the Zimbabwe Military Police Investigations Branch on cell phone number 0712 831 705 or landline (0242) 252 094.
