Second Republic’s achievements not reversible: Pres Mnangagwa

President Mnangagwa has today said that the Second Republic’s successes were irreversible as they were the bedrock to uplift Zimbabweans out of poverty into prosperity.

In his Independence Day message at Mt Darwin High School today, President Mnangagwa said that about 7 000 life changing programmes have been implemented across the country.

“The successes realised by the Second Republic are irreversible. To date, my Administration has implemented about 7 000 high impact, life-changing projects since 2018, as a bedrock to lift our people out of poverty into prosperity,” said the President.

The President said it was encouraging that inflationary pressures continue to ease due to a combination of fiscal consolidation and tight monetary policy measures.

According to the President, more households are moving from subsistence farming to undertaking farming as a business. He added that this 2022/2023 season, the country was projecting over 3.2 million metric tonnes of cereals against an annual requirement of 2.2 million metric tonnes.

The President added that as a result of public private partnerships, a total of 1 641tractors and combine harvesters were distributed by December last year, while 4 400 additional tractors were being imported towards closing the farm mechanisation gap.

The President further said that dams being constructed across all provinces were set to ensure aspects related to hydro power, fisheries, irrigation development and potable water benefit local communities.

President Mnangagwa added that his Government was in the process of drilling one borehole per village across the country, with the accompanying nutrition gardens, orchards, and fisheries also being established.

The President claimed that the on-going technical commissioning of Hwange Unit 7 and Unit 8 would enhance stability of power supply. He added that going forward; communities would be encouraged to harness the abundant sunshine for renewable energy generation.

According to President Mnangagwa, the Second Republic stands ready to regularly review the conditions of service of all public sector workers, including through the provision of non-monetary benefits.

Meanwhile, surviving members of the ZIPRA and ZANLA high command attended the celebrations. Also in attendance was former Vice President Joyce Mujuru and former ZANU PF members Shadreck Mashayamombe, Jappy Jaboon and Wonder Mashange. Opposition leaders such as Douglas Mwonzora, Linda Masarira and Professor Lovemore Madhuku also graced the event.
