Sikhala set to launch a new political party amid factional disputes

As the fragmentation of Zimbabwe’s main opposition political party continues unabated, former Zengeza West legislator, Job Sikhala, is reportedly poised to launch a new political formation to be named the National Democratic Taskforce (NDT).

A source who spoke to this publication said that Sikhala was frustrated by the factional fights within the CCC and has resolved to be his own man politically.

The source revealed that Sikhala’s party which would be temporarily headquartered at 33 Arlington East, Harare Drive, Harare, is scheduled to hold its first meeting on 01 March 2024 to map way forward.

"Job Sikhala and his team are scheduled to convene a crucial meeting this Friday, 1 March 2024 to chart a comprehensive roadmap for the launch of the new party.

“Sikhala has grown increasingly disillusioned by the factional infighting and ideological discord among CCC members. He has decided to assert his independence and pursue his political aspirations autonomously,” said the source.

Following this meeting, Sikhala intends to address the media through a press conference to formally announce the party's inception.

The source revealed that initially, Sikhala had envisioned aligning himself with former CCC leader Nelson Chamisa. However, fundamental disparities in political agendas and views became apparent, rendering collaboration untenable.

"Sikhala recognised that his vision diverged significantly from Chamisa's, making it impractical to coexist within the same political entity," the source emphasised.

Notably, his close associate Obert Masaraure, who is also ARTUZ president, is poised to assume the role of interim national chairperson until an elective congress is convened.

The source revealed that in a bid to bolster his party, Sikhala is actively engaging with political stalwarts, including Democratic Party (DP) president Dr Urayayi Zembe.

The source underscored the historical ties between Sikhala and Dr. Zembe, stating, "Sikhala regards Dr Zembe as his political mentor, with their association predating the formation of the MDC in 1999."

Moreover, the source claimed that Sikhala is extending invitations to other prominent figures, such as Dr Ibbo Mandaza, to join his nascent political venture.

The source hinted that Sikhala’s new party would likely use the red colour as its primary official hue, symbolising resilience and solidarity.

Amidst this unfolding political landscape, confusion permeates the opposition fraternity, with factions splintering into disparate formations driven by conflicting ideologies and personal ambitions.

Chamisa is also expected to announce the formation of his new party, tentatively named the Democratic Alternative of Zimbabwe, further exacerbating the fragmentation within the opposition.

Political commentator, Terrence Chipwanya said that “the impending launch of Sikhala's National Democratic Taskforce heralds a new chapter in Zimbabwean politics, characterised by shifting alliances and evolving dynamics within the opposition sphere.”

Sikhala could not be reached for comment as he was not answering his mobile phones.
