Zimbabwe’s gastronomy tourism is stirring up a flavourful blend of economic prospects and cultural exchange and has received widespread acclaim.

During the 2nd day of Amai's Cookout Competition at the University of Zimbabwe, Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Barbara Rwodzi, emphasized the transformative power of gastronomy.

“Gastronomy is more than just food; it is a vehicle for social cohesion and economic development, the Ministry of Tourism has strategically infused gastronomy into the Culture and Heritage Cluster and this aligns with the nation's efforts to promote and develop tourism as outlined in the Tourism Act,” Minister Rwodzi stated.

Economist Calvin Chitsunge weighing in on this development has commended Government's recent engagement in various cookouts, stating, “This initiative aligns with President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s foreign policy agenda, which prioritizes economic recovery, growth, and investor attraction.”

In addition, Chitsunge remarked that initiatives like the cookout challenge serve as integral components of a broader strategy to showcase Zimbabwe’s rich cultural heritage and culinary traditions, potentially attracting tourists and fostering goodwill among nations.

“The cookout challenge, involving ambassadors and international participants, reflects Zimbabwe’s commitment to international collaboration and cultural exchange, thereby enhancing its global standing,” Chitsunge stated

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe’s efforts to leverage gastronomy tourism to diversify its tourism product base have garnered significant global attention. As a result, the country has been granted the honour of hosting the first-ever UN Tourism Africa Gastronomy Conference later this year.

This prestigious event underscores Zimbabwe’s dedication to showcasing its culinary diversity and solidifying its position as a key player in the global gastronomy tourism scene.

Zimbabwe’s embrace of gastronomy tourism not only enriches its cultural tapestry but also presents lucrative economic opportunities. With the upcoming UN Tourism Africa Gastronomy Conference, Zimbabwe is poised to showcase its culinary prowess on the global stage, attracting visitors from far and wide.
