In a definitive stance against ongoing speculations, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has made it clear that he will not pursue a third term in office.

This announcement comes amid widespread rumours and conjecture about his potential extension of tenure.

During a question-and-answer session with Brick by Brick Magazine, editors Munyaradzi Huni and Baffour Ankomah, President, took the opportunity to reiterate ZANU PF's dedication to democracy and strict adherence to the country's constitutional guidelines.

“But we in ZANU PF are very democratic, and we obey the Constitution. There is not an iota of evidence where ZANU PF or I, as President, have ever expressed the violation of our Constitution,” the President firmly stated.

The President added that the rumours about him seeking a third term in office show that there is democracy in the country.

“Well, I am very happy that Zimbabweans are very imaginative. They can imagine about anything, which shows there is democracy in the country, you see,” said President Mnangagwa.

Political commentator Calvin Chitsunge said that the President's remarks are a clear testament to his commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that Zimbabwe continues to respect its constitutional framework.

“His reassurance aims to strengthen public confidence in the nation's governance and its democratic processes. By declaring his decision not to seek re-election, President Mnangagwa has put to rest any doubts regarding his respect for constitutional term limits and his dedication to democratic governance. His position not only clarifies his future political intentions but also reinforces the importance of constitutional integrity within Zimbabwe's political landscape,” said Chitsunge.

Chitsunge added that President Mnangagwa's reaffirmation of democratic values and adherence to constitutional principles sets a commendable example for Zimbabwe's political future.

“It underscores a commitment to governance that respects legal frameworks and fosters a healthy democratic environment,” said Chitsunge.

Meanwhile, this recent declaration marks the second occasion President Mnangagwa has publicly stated his intention to not pursue a third term, previously making a similar assertion in an interview with ZTN Prime on the eve of last year's harmonised general elections.
