The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Development has kick started the construction on the Cecil Avenue road rehabilitation project in Bulawayo Metropolitan Province, marking a significant stride towards Zimbabwe’s Vision2030 transport infrastructure goals.

According to the Ministry’s official X page yesterday, the upgrade aims to enhance road networks.

“Construction is underway on the Cecil Avenue Road Rehabilitation Project in Bulawayo Metropolitan Province, a critical step toward our vision of becoming a regional hub of world-class transport networks, logistics, and services by 2030,” the Ministry said.

Motorists and residents have welcomed the upgrade applauding the Government for the road rehab as it will enhance smoothtravelling and business opportunities.

“The improvements will enhance mobility, reduce travel times, and boost investor confidence in the province,” said Nothando Ndlovu, local reasident.

Cecil Avenue is a key arterial road in Bulawayo which links the city to several major industrial and residential areas. The rehabilitation work includes resurfacing, drainage upgrades, and road widening in high-traffic zones.

Beyond Bulawayo, the Second Republic is actively pursuing other roadworks in Matabeleland North and South provinces. These include the ongoing rehabilitation of the Beitbridge-Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Highway, a strategic corridor for regional trade and tourism, which is being reconstructed in phases to improve road safety and travel efficiency.

In Matabeleland North, work is progressing on the Lupane-Kusile Bubi Road, aimed at opening up access to agricultural markets and connecting rural communities to economic opportunities. Meanwhile, in Matabeleland South, the Gwanda-Maphisa Road is being upgraded to bitumen standard to facilitate movement between mining hubs and commercial centres.

Local authorities have praised the central Government’s efforts, noting that improved road infrastructure is critical for attracting investment and enabling economic growth in historically marginalised regions.

The Ministry has urged motorists and the public to exercise patience during the rehabilitation works, as short-term disruptions are expected. Completion timelines for the Cecil Avenue upgrade are yet to be announced, though officials remain confident the project will significantly transform the city’s transport landscape.
