New Parliament building gets National Projects Status

The new Parliament building in Mt Hampden is set to be completed next year following the granting of the National Project status from Government.

Presenting the 2019 budget which is the first in the Second Republic, Finance and Economic Development Minister, Professor Mthuli Ncube said Government has injected 3,2million from the fiscal resources for the completion of the building.

The budget was presented under the theme “Austerity for Prosperity”

He said 31. 9 million from the People’s Republic of China would be disbursed to the project to cover works and roads.

According to the Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, government has already completed servicing of the land which entailed opening up the access road, water provision and electricity.

The construction of a 650-seater parliament building was mooted over a decade ago to replace the old one which was built during the colonial era where the number of legislators can no longer fit.

The building is configured to accommodate joint sittings of the National Assembly and Senate.

The new structure will have extra facilities for conferencing, 12 committee rooms and adequate space for office staff and hectares of parking space.

This is one of the many projects being financed in the country and the vision of President Mnangagwa of making Zimbabwe attain middle economy by 2030 attainable.

Since his inauguration, President Mnangagwa has been addressing glitches that had been stalling the implementation of several projects in the country.
