MDC politicising aid distribution

By Christopher Makaza

MDC Councillor for Ward 20, Musikavanhu in Chipinge, Charles Mughidho has been sucked into the eye of a storm over the partisan distribution of aid to victims of Cyclone Idai.

This comes hard on the heels of similar allegations that were levelled against Zanu PF. However, international NGOs have roundly dismissed the frenzied and hyped allegations.

In a picture which has gone viral on social media, Mughidho is visibly seen distributing the Cyclone Idai aid relief to party supporters with the assistance of officials, Rayton Muvheyo, Mashapa and one identified as Levy.

MDC and other detractors are unfortunately spreading lies that Zanu PF is the one distributing the aid relief on political grounds after the ruling party offered vehicles to transport the goods to the affected areas.

Harare Mayor, Hebert Gomba together with former Mutare Mayor, Brian James were last week allegedly blocked from directly distributing food aid to cyclone victims in Chimanimani.

Chimanimani and Chipinge in the south east of Manicaland were the worst affected areas after the deadly tropical Cyclone Idai ripped through the province, leaving a trail of destruction and over 400 people dead.

Government has so far released $100 million as it intensifies efforts to assist victims by way of restoring basic infrastructure and ensuring that the affected people access food and other basic necessities on time.

An estimated 50 000 households translating to about 250 000 people, including 120 000 children, have been affected by the floods and landslides.
