The local sugar manufacturers’ body, the Zimbabwe Sugar Association (ZSA) has assured the nation that it has enough sugar to meet the nation’s requirements.

This comes amid the resurfacing of long queues for sugar at some retail outlets in the country over the past few weeks.

“The ZSA has noted with grave concern that starting on or about Thursday 16 May 2019, there has been an abnormal surge in the demand for sugar throughout the country resulting in artificial shortages due to speculative activities by some unscrupulous traders. This has resulted in panic buying by customers,” read a statement issued by the ZSA chairman Muchadeyi Masunda.

The association assured the nation that, notwithstanding this malpractice, it has enough sugar to cover the Zimbabwe’s needs.

“The sugar industry wishes to re-assure all stakeholders that the country has sufficient sugar stocks to meet national requirements. In this regard, the ZSA would like to urge retailers and wholesalers to continue behaving responsibly. The ZSA further advises its valued customers that the industry will continue to deliver nationwide to meet normal domestic requirements,” said Masunda
