Harare City Council crippled by massive graft

MDC-run Harare City Council (HCC) is crippled by massive graft as it continues without information records of the number of operational businesses in Harare, Harare Post can reveal.

In an editorial article by the NewsDay on, 28 August 2019, Harare Mayor, Herbert Gomba, revealed that massive graft had rendered the country’s capital city virtually useless and incapable of delivering any meaningful service.

“We realised there is a lot of rot in council, and there was no information on who runs what and how many businesses have been licenced, among other things. This was despite the fact that our environmental health officers would go out and feast on the revenue that was supposed to come our way. We have no information whatsoever on the shops in the CBD (central business district) and other areas and also on car sales, among other businesses,” said Gomba.

The revelation by Gomba shows that the City Council is embedded in corrupt activities which need to be investigated and ironed out.

The disclosure by the Harare Mayor proves that the MDC run council is failing in its mandate to provide basic service delivery to its residents.

The Capital City continues to face water shortages, non-repair of sewer pipes leading to disease outbreaks, non-collection of garbage that can be seen littered in most parts of the city. The garbage has become the breeding ground for most infectious diseases which are being spread by flies and floods in most parts of the residential areas.

As a solution to the HCC woes, Government should take up a position to overrun the town council and take up its failed responsibilities, an action that will expose the gross mismanagement and corruption that has been going on in our beloved Harare town council at the expense of innocent rate payers.
