MRTH receives new look, thanks to Government

MDC’s Morgan Ritchard Tsvangirai House (MRTH) formerly known as Harvest House has started receiving a facelift after the opposition party got about $3.4 million from Government under the Political Finance Act.

The building has been an eyesore for some time now with broken windows, dirty walls and broken furniture punctuating the party offices.

Party members accuse some senior party officials for misusing funds which the party receives from Western donors, well-wishers and Government.

“We really appreciate the money which we got from Government. Without that we were not able to renovate our party offices. It is unfortunate that senior party members are corrupt. What they think of after receiving such huge sums of money is to buy themselves luxury vehicles and giving themselves hefty allowances at the expense of party activities.

“Our party had initially planned to use the money to finance our Gweru elective congress in May and to fund our anti-government protests and demonstrations which were however prohibited by police,” said one party official.

MDC is failing to pay its workers’ salaries for the past twelve months and the workers accuse the party leaders for misplaced priorities.

MRTH is one of the major debtors at City of Harare owing the council over $200 000. Sometime in April 2019, there was an execution order for the attachment of MRTH, and the acting chamber secretary, Mr Charles Kandemiri, however stopped the process.

Harare residents are being fed dirty water and subjected to an ever-present threat of disease and death due to poor service while the MDC`s MRTH is among those failing to pay rates.

MDC reportedly used part of the money from Government to transport party members who included Deputy Organising Secretary, Happymore Chidziva to the on-going United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to demonstrate against President Emmerson Mnangagwa and Government.
