Confidence in Chamisa’s leadership wanes

MDC is facing serious divisions amid growing loss of confidence in that party’s leader, Nelson Chamisa who has been described as despotic, the Harare Post reports.

A highly placed source within the shaky party revealed that Chamisa has been accused of failing to announce dates for the anti-government demonstrations.

“Since our May 2019 congress, the president (Chamisa) has not given his followers a signal to embark on ant-Zanu PF government demonstrations. There is a lot of appetite for demonstration but our leader chooses not to be confrontational. We have begun to doubt his leadership capabilities,” said the source who is a member of that party’s Standing Committee.

He revealed that 90% of the Standing Committee members rally behind that party’s co-vice president, Tendai Biti’s coup plot. He further revealed that the coup plot involves that party’s vice chairman, Job Sikhala, the secretary general Charlton Hwende, co-vice leader professor Welshman Ncube, co-vice president Lynnette Karenyi-Kore, deputy organising secretary Happymore Chidziva, national chairperson Tabitha Khumalo and national youth chairperson Obey Sithole.

“On his (Chamisa’s) side are organising secretary Amos Chibaya, national youth secretary general Gift Ostallos Siziba, and Promise Mkwananzi. His former ally, Morgan Komichi is sitting on the fence

“Even some members of the Council of Elders like James Makore, Theresa Makone, Cephas Makuyana and Morgan Femai are also disgruntled. They accuse him of self-importance, dictatorship and of ignoring the party’s founding principles,” said the source.

Shakespeare Mukoyi, the leader of the party’s disbanded militia group, the Vanguard, is also up in arms against Chamisa whom he accuses of using them in wrestling power from Thokozani Khupe. Mukoyi said that Chamisa dumped them after the completion of the mission.

The source said Chamisa dismantled the Vanguard out of fear since he the militia was linked to Biti.

Another bone of contention, the source said, was Chamisa’s alleged connection with the G40 top dogs. The top leadership is also disgruntled over Chamisa’s intention to replace Jameson Timba with Mwananzi as the party’s deputy secretary general. They say Mkwananzi is unfit for the job considering his history of misusing donor funds.
