MDC led town councils discharging raw effluent in rivers

MDC led town councils continue to discharge untreated sewer effluent into the environment in various towns  across the country, the Harare Post can report.

On its Face Book page, the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) said it was promoting environmental quality by regulating environmental pollution since quite a number of town councils were in a habit of discharging raw sewer effluent into the environment.

“Promoting environmental quality through regulating environmental pollution, Norton town was given an order by the Court of Law following cases of discharging raw or untreated sewer effluent into the environment. Victoria Falls Municipality, Municipality of Gwanda and Kariba town are some of the Local Authorities who also recently appeared before the courts for polluting the environment. Six more court cases of a similar nature are currently pending. Let's promote a clean, safe and healthy environment for all citizens. My environment, my pride, together-protecting the environment,” said the environmental authority.

The Harare Post has learnt that recently the High Court of Zimbabwe ordered Norton Town Council to stop its habit of deliberately not rehabilitating Norton water and sewer treatment plants and pipes to the satisfaction of the application but should also ensure that effluent is properly treated and in the blue class category and that there are no more leakages and spillages into the environment.
