Government has added Unki Mine and PSI to the inventory of testing laboratories, bringing the number of testing laboratories countrywide to 32, as it enhances protective measures to combat COVID19.

During a media briefing, the Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Monica Mutsvangwa, highlighted Government’s strategic response to contain the spread of the disease, through testing.

“In light of the crucial role played by testing in understanding and correctly responding to the COVID19 pandemic, Unki Mine and PSI have been added to the inventory of testing laboratories, bringing the number of testing laboratories countrywide to 32.

“Additionally, renovations of the Dangerous Pathogens Laboratory are now complete and the lab is ready for commissioning,” she said.

Adding on, she said as part of efforts to combat and respond to the COVID19 pandemic, Government had adopted a deliberate policy for innovation and import substitution.

“As a result of this push, Zimbabwe’s tertiary institution and local companies have been producing various PPEs, drugs and other medical sundries which are crucial to the fight against COVID19.

“ZLG, a local company has diversified and is now manufacturing 40 000 surgical face masks per day which have been certified by the Standards Association of Zimbabwe. These masks are 50 percent cheaper than the imported variety,” said Minister Mutsvangwa.

In response to the Cabinet meeting of 18 August 2020, which took note of the change in transmission scenarios and directed the setting up of a mechanism that would strengthen management and response to the rising local transmissions; the Taskforce was reported to have received nominations for 13 candidates who would soon make up an Experts Advisory Committee.

Minister Mutsvangwa also implored citizens to continue being vigilant as facts at hand indicated that community transmissions were still on the rise.

“Let us not be complacent, but continue to adhere to protective and preventative measures,” she said.
