Zim to have secure information systems by 2030

Zimbabwe will soon have secure information systems by 2030, a Cabinet Minister has said.

Deputy Minister for Information Communication Technologies (ICTs), Postal and Courier Services, Dingimuzi Phuti, speaking during a Multi-Stakeholder Workshop on the Cyber Security and Data Protection Bill today in Harare said, Government was aligning its laws with international best practices to have secure information systems by 2030.

“Government is aligning its laws with international best practices...The process contributes towards the Ministry’s vision, a collated knowledge based society with secure information systems by 2030, and its mission to provide accessible universal affordable and modern high quality ICT services to improve the quality of life for Zimbabweans,” he said.

The Deputy Minister also said, “Zimbabwe is a signatory to a number of international and regional concessions and treaties such as the United Nations Summit and Information Society which set goals for information and technology growth.

“Like many other countries in the region Zimbabwe is in the process of harmonizing cyber security laws with those in the region, increase international cooperation and fight cyber crime,” said the Deputy Minister.

Harare Post has learnt that, in 2016, the Government of Zimbabwe adopted a policy position that promotes and advocates for e-security to pre-empt and host proper security measures that lead to public security, peace and order.

As a Southern African Development Community (SADC) member state, Zimbabwe adopted the SADC ICT model laws which were developed by the international telecommunications and the European Commission joint project in Sub-Sahara Africa.
