MDC-Alliance violence cases on the rise

MDC-Alliance Manicaland Provincial Assembly Organising Secretary, Itai Masaka was on 24 October 2021 arrested on allegations of malicious damage to property  after he stormed Zanu-PF Ward 14 District Youth Chair, Malcom Masarira`s house at number 301 Chikanga Phase 1 in Mutare.

It is alleged that Masaka in the company of other MDC-Alliance supporters stormed and confronted Masarira, accusing him of being part of the team that attempted to assassinate MDC-Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa on 19 October 2021. It is alleged that Masaka broke the gate, manhandled Masarira and assaulted him. Masarira then reported the case at Chikanga Police station.

Relatedly, 15 MDC-Alliance members led by Goromonzi South Youth Assembly Chairperson, Davison Chamisa and Stephen Chagwiza attacked Zanu-PF members in Caledonia on 24 October 2021. Chamisa and his team were coming from an aborted belated 22nd Anniversary celebrations at Ebenezar School open space in Caledonia when they attacked the Zanu-PF members who were at a tuck shop in the area.

Previously, the opposition used to accuse the ruling party Zanu-PF of unleashing violence, but it has since emerged that the opposition is in the fore front of such heinous acts. Unleashing violence has become the MDC-Alliance`s trademark which is entrenched in its DNA.

In 2007, the MDC linked Democratic Resistance Committees (DRC) unleashed massive violence, targeting security forces especially the police. This saw Marimba and Harare Central Police Stations as well as other police stations in various places being petrol bombed. The DRCs took their violence to the 2008 and other elections that followed, threatening to make the country “ungovernable’’.

The same DRCs have been reactivated ahead of the 2023 Harmonised Elections. According to a source within the opposition party, the DRCs have already mobilised all sorts of weapons, ranging from guns, catapults and sjamboks in the name of protecting their leader, Chamisa whom they allege is under attack from Zanu-PF.
