Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development says Government has spent approximately $6.8 million on construction of the 6km stretch from Goromonzi turn off to Goromonzi tollgate as part of the broader project to dualize the Harare-Mutare Highway.

Speaking during the official opening of the dualized section, the Minister for Transport, Dr Joram Gumbo said Government, under the new dispensation was committed to infrastructure development, and especially roads rehabilitation.

“It is my understanding that the completion of this section of the project will make communication between Marondera, Goromonzi District and the capital city much easier,” he said.

“The Ministry is acutely aware of the importance of this road, not only to Harare Metropolitan Province and Mashonaland East Province but also to the national economy because it links Goromonzi District, Marondera, Wedza, Manicaland Province as well as Mozambique to our capital city of Harare.”

The section of the road had for a long time been characterized by congestion due to increased levels of traffic, and its  narrowness,  making it difficult for motorists due to travel, a situation which has been averted by the dualized section.

Dr Gumbo also added that that his ministry was seized with dualization of the Goromonzi tollgate to Melfort section with the intention to cover a distance of 5km during this phase of the project.

The project for the dualization of Harare-Mutare Highway started in October 2017.
