Intoxicated Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) members caused commotion in Chitungwiza yesterday after they attacked the police and members of the public with beer bottles and stones.

A source who spoke to this publication said that a group of drunken CCC members who were conducting a door to door campaign in Chitungwiza Ward 7, turned violent and began pelting members of the public with stones and empty beer bottles.

According to the source, the CCC members were being led by Chitungwiza Ward 7 aspiring councillor, Lovemore Maiko, who directed the intoxicated members to attack the police and members of the public alleging that they were disturbing their campaign.

“The CCC members were conducting a door to door campaign in Zengeza yesterday. They were visibly drunk and were singing derogatory songs and were spewing some vulgarities. They were being led by Maiko who was also drunk,” said the source.

The source added that the commotion started when some members of the public asked the CCC members to stop shouting vulgar and conduct a peaceful campaign.

“The melee started when the CCC members were cautioned by some members of the public to stop shouting vulgar and engage in a peaceful and orderly campaign. They started pelting the members of the public with empty beer bottles and stones, and a number of people were injured. When the police came to quell the violence, they were also attacked by the CCC thugs,” said the source.

The source added that the CCC members were drinking illicit beer (mutoriro) and some of them were openly smoking marijuana. He added that they behaved as if they were on a mission to cause violence as they were not behaving in an orderly manner.

Meanwhile, the CCC leadership has since accused the Police for causing the violence. The CCC interim spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere has exonerated her party from the violence and accused ZANU PF of causing the violence by trying to impede a CCC campaign in that Ward.
