Use local languages to promote development: Pres Mnangagwa

President Mnangagwa has urged Zimbabweans to take advantage of their diverse languages to promote economic growth throughout the country.

Speaking at the National Languages Conference in Victoria Falls today, the President said that the broader use of the indigenous languages should trigger development across the country.

“Similarly, increased production and productivity in sectors such as agriculture, mining and manufacturing, among others, should be promoted through the use of our own indigenous languages. The broader use of indigenous languages including sign language has to trigger active participation of our communities across the length and breadth of the country towards nation building and socio-economic development programmes from the ward level upwards,” said the President.

The President added that an informed citizenry was more empowered and equipped to play a part in the building of the country. He further said that indigenous languages were critical for improving social cohesion as they give communities a sense of inclusivity.

President Mnangagwa further said that the revitalisation of the indigenous languages was essential for ensuring the continuation and transmission of culture, customs and history. He added that the family unit was vital as it was the first place where a person could learn the indigenous languages.

The President added that the knowledge of indigenous languages will help to reinforce the local cultural norms which emphasise the respect of oneself and others, including the elderly and the environment.

President Mnangagwa added that he expects the Conference to contribute to the building of a solid foundation which would guarantee a future where all citizens would be able to articulate their thoughts, values, experiences and customs in their respective languages.

Meanwhile, the President said that as the country moves towards the 2023 plebiscite, Zimbabweans should join hands as they fight corruption and promote unity, love, peace and harmony.
