One hundred and fifty-two local teachers recently signed contracts to start working in Rwanda from next week.

A source within the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare told this publication that teachers who signed the contracts would depart for Rwanda on 17 October 2022 to start work.

“All I can tell you is that a total of 152 teachers have signed contracts to work in Rwanda. The number was supposed to be around 198 but 46 failed to sign contracts last week citing the need to consult further from their spouses and others decided to continue working within the country. Those who signed contracts are expected to depart for Kigali, Rwanda on 17 October 2022,” said the source.

The source added that the 152 teachers would be employed in programmes such as General Basic Education (GBE), Basic Technical and Vocational Education and Training program as well as Health and Medicine Training.

According to the source, a seminar was held last week at Zimbabwe Institute of Public Administration and Management (ZIPAM) in Norton to deliberate on how to promote safe migration of teachers through availing pertinent information on Rwanda. The source added that teachers who were migrating to Rwanda would be paid thrice the amount their counterparts in Rwanda were getting. The source revealed that the salaries for these teachers would be ranging between US$ 672 to US$ 2 652.

The same source further revealed that the Government was in consultations with the Rwandan Government to ensure that teachers, particularly those who were employed by the Government, were not prejudiced on their pension’s contributions. Government advised the concerned teachers that modalities to ensure the continuation of their pensions contributions was being pursued with the Public Service Commission.

Meanwhile, the migration of teachers to Rwanda is in fulfilment of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Exchange of Educational Personnel between Zimbabwe and Rwanda signed on 23 December 2021.
