MDC Alliance lawyers make unsubstantiated harassment claims

The head of a team of MDC Alliance lawyers who are preparing a court challenge of the July 30 election results, Advocate Thabani Mpofu, alleged that he was being harassed by suspected State security agents.

Mpofu said this while addressing a press conference in Harare where he was expected to reveal the date they would approach the courts to make the election challenge.

Asked by one journalist to reveal the exact harassment he had suffered, Mpofu could not give an encounter that amounted to aggressive pressure or intimidation.

“We are being followed, we are being attacked left, right and center. There are reports of arrest and imminent arrest all over the place. It’s the same nonsense reloaded,” said Mpofu.

Political analyst, Mr Mlungisi Ndelebe said the MDC Alliance and its surrogate groups were thriving on peddling falsehoods with the aim of getting undeserved international sympathy, in a bid to ensure that sanctions that have been derailing the ruling party’s programs stay in place.

Ndebele questioned why Mpofu, a lawyer, could not clearly state the kind of attack he was getting whether it was physical, verbal or on the cyber space and opt to dismiss issue such as harassment as the same nonsense.

On reports of imminent arrest, Ndebele said Mpofu was mixing issues, saying MDC Alliance members who announced results before the official results were released and those that instigated the violence of 1 August were the ones facing imminent arrest not MDC Alliance lawyers.
