Kariba Dam water levels have risen to useable levels, bringing hope to businesses and home dwellers who will soon experience reduced power cuts.

Speaking to this publication a source within the Zambezi River Authority, revealed that the Kariba water levels have improved significantly in the past days.

“We have experienced an increase in rainfall, this was witnessed throughout the country, causing the Kariba water levels to rise to 475.80 meters as from 13 January 2023.

“The present water levels at Kariba dam show that 2.14% is useable. The Kariba dam is designed to operate between 475.50m and 488.50m with 0.70m freeboard for hydro power generation. It shows that since December 31 2022 water levels have been rising giving a usable percentage from 0.77% to 2.14%,” said the source.

According to the source the rise in water levels will improve power generation into the national grid significantly reducing loadshedding hours to three hours a day from the current eight hours.

Meanwhile, Captains of industry have applauded the increase in water levels as it will have a significant impact on their operations, which were being hamstrung by rolling power cuts.
