MDC-T cracks ahead of elections

Chaos continues to reign supreme within MDC-T with a breakaway faction holding a press conference yesterday denouncing that party’s leader, Douglas Mwonzora.

A breakaway group from the opposition MDC-T led by Engineer Elias Mudzuri castigated Mwonzora, labelling him a dictator who presides over a party with shambolic structures.

Mudzuri said Mwonzora failed to uphold the values and principles enshrined in the MDC-T’s constitution.

“In the recent past one Douglas Togaraseyi Mwonzora abused the party constitution by implementing unconstitutional processes which culminated in the installation of the party leadership through an illegible group of people outside the national congress as mandated by the party constitution. This was a blatant attempt by Douglas Mwonzora to take over the party through an unconstitutional process.

“It is in this view that the membership of the MDC who believe that their party which is membership and structure driven cannot remain by-standers in the process and now seek to redress the situation and make sure that the provisions stated in the party’s constitution are followed. The party constitution is very clear on how the party is organised, managed and how leadership positions are filled and, more importantly, the inalienable roles of party structures in such processes. Accordingly, for Douglas Mwonzora to usurp the powers of the party, branches, wards, districts and provinces in the national congress agenda renders such an event null and void and hence of no force or effect,” said Mudzuri.

Engineer Mudzuri added that the current MDC-T national council was unconstitutional and urged that party’s members not to recognise Mwonzora as the MDC-T leader.

Asked why the electorate should trust a party that is going through a leadership crisis a few months before the election, Mudzuri said members of the MDC were not ready for any election. He said members were not consulted when a congress meant to choose their representatives was held.

Meanwhile, there are reports that the MDC-T has been infiltrated by Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) in order to disintegrate that party before the elections.
