Zim-Mozambique celebrate Samora Machel

President Emmerson Mnangagwa together and his visiting Mozambican counterpart, President Filipe Nyusi today presided over the ground breaking ceremony to mark the construction of the Samora Machel Monument at the Liberation City in Harare.

The Monument is being erected in remembrance and celebration of the late Mozambican President, Machel who died in a plane crash in 1986.

Speaking at the ground breaking ceremony today, President Mnangagwa said that Zimbabwe and Mozambique were standing in solidarity in celebrating an iconic leader and Mozambique’s Founding Father, the late Machel.

“Today, Zimbabwe and Mozambique stand in solidarity in celebrating an iconic leader and Founding Father, the late Cde Samora Machel. We are enjoying the fruits of his tireless efforts in the Liberation of Southern African and the emancipation of fellow African brothers and sisters,” said President Mnangagwa.

Additionally, President Mnangagwa handed over an acre of land overlooking Samora Machel Avenue at the Liberation City dedicated for the project with President Filipe Nyusi being given the honour to break the ground for the construction of the monument.

The President lauded his Mozambican counterpart, President Nyusi for supporting the idea of constructing the African Museum in Zimbabwe.

 “We are honoured by the commitment and unwavering support of the Republic of Mozambique to the Museum of African Liberation project that seeks to preserve African history for posterity. The museum narrates the African story from an African perspective and experience. The Republic of Mozambique has taken the lead by pioneering tangible support in the establishment of this pan-African institution. We look forward to other African countries taking their space made available here at the Liberation City,” said President Mnangagwa.

President Mnangagwa also highlighted how the project had managed to gather momentum in line with the Second Republic’s thrust of rapid and massive development.

After the ground breaking ceremony, President Mnangagwa and President Nyusi attended the inaugural Zimbabwe-Mozambique Business Forum and Exhibition at Rainbow Towers in Harare.

Speaking at the event, President Mnangagwa said the Forum afforded the two countries’ respective private sectors and entrepreneurs an opportunity to explore the many business opportunities that exist between them.

The President added that it was reassuring that the cornerstone of our Zimbabwe-Mozambique relationship had moved from the battlefield to industries, manufacturing, value addition and beneficiation as well as increased production and productivity.
