Prof Moyo castigates US Embassy

Political commentator and former Cabinet Minister, Professor Jonathan Moyo has castigated the United States (US) Embassy in Harare for its continued interference in Zimbabwe’s internal politics.

Professor Moyo’s comments came following the US Embassy’s tweet that commented on the country’s electoral processes.

Writing on his Twitter handle yesterday, Prof Moyo said that the US embassy’s interference in Zimbabwe’s domestic politics such as elections was uncalled for.

“The US embassy clearly and provocatively crossed the line, and it knew that it was crossing it to test the political waters, to see how deep it could dive into the country's electoral politics by effecting what it is already funding local US surrogates to do.

“It has to be said in the strongest terms for the umpteenth time that, as accredited foreign missions the US embassy in Zimbabwe and other embassies, can observe domestic politics like elections a subject to the country's laws but they cannot participate in domestic politics,” said Prof Moyo.

He further added that the Embassy’s interference in the country’s politics was not supported by any law.

“There is absolutely nothing in their credentials, in the Electoral Act nor in any other national law nor the Vienna Convention that gives them any right to participate in domestic politics in whatever shape or form,” said Prof Moyo.

Prof Moyo said that the US Embassy in Zimbabwe should emulate what the Zimbabwean Embassy in Washington was doing and stop meddling in the country’s politics.

“This position is reciprocal, the Embassy of Zimbabwe in Washington DC can observe US domestic political processes subject to the laws of that country, but it cannot participate in those processes,” said Professor Moyo.

Meanwhile, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said that foreign observers were welcome to observe the forthcoming elections but should do so in line with the country’s laws.
