Buy Zimbabwe, a prominent social enterprise championing the promotion of quality Zimbabwean goods, has issued a statement applauding the Government’s recent decision to reinstate import duties on some basic commodities.

In a press statement issued yesterday, Buy Zimbabwe General Manager, Alois Burutsa, characterized the move as a progressive development that would significantly contribute to fostering a fairer competitive landscape for domestically produced goods.

“We would like to highlight the potential of this move to incentivize consumers towards choosing locally made products, thereby bolstering the domestic economy and fostering job growth,” emphasized Burutsa.

In addition, the organization underscored the importance of this development in increasing capacity utilization and deepening economies of scale, which is anticipated to result in lower prices on the domestic market.

“The development will help increase capacity utilization and deepen economies of scale, translating to lower prices on the domestic market,” he affirmed.

Furthermore, Burutsa emphasized that the reinstatement of import duties served not only to stimulate the local economy but also to level the playing field for domestic products in comparison to their foreign counterparts.

He highlighted the unfair advantage enjoyed by numerous foreign products benefiting from rebates or subsidies in their home countries, which previously entered Zimbabwe duty-free.

“The reintroduction of import duties serves not only to stimulate the local economy but also levels the playing field for domestic products in comparison to their foreign counterparts,” he noted.

Buy Zimbabwe strongly believes that Government support through policies promoting local content will enable Zimbabwean companies to provide products that are not only cheaper and more competitive but also capable of satisfying both local and export market demands.

“It is our strong belief that if the local industry is supported by the Government through policies that promote local content, Zimbabwean companies will not only provide products that are cheaper and more competitive but can also satisfy local market demand and the export market,” affirmed Buy Zimbabwe.

Meanwhile, Buy Zimbabwe promotes the production and consumption of local goods and services on the local and international markets. It is also designed to unlock the country’s full potential and inspire economic growth and the competitiveness of local brands.
