The Zimbabwe has a ‘crisis’ mantra suffered a major blow yesterday when Zimbabwe was elected Chairperson of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) Regional Conference for Africa.

Among other responsibilities, Zimbabwe will lead the reviewing of the nutrition security structure, something the country has been doing well at home despite being under illegal sanctions and climate change induced droughts in recent years.

Some political analysts have contended that a country in a ‘crisis’ cannot be trusted by the region to head a critical regional organisation. Further to that an analyst opined that the region cannot show confidence to a country in a ‘crisis’.

Zimbabwe’s Minister for Lands, Agriculture, Water and Rural Resettlement, Dr. Anxious Masuka will Chair FAO Regional Conference for Africa following his election.

“The Government of Zimbabwe is pleased to be supporting and to be part of this important forum. We look forward to the solid recommendations to strengthen nations post COVID-19,” said Masuka.

Zimbabwe is hosting the 31st virtual session of the FAO regional conference which commenced this week on Monday.

Agriculture is the country’s second foreign currency earner after minerals. The export products include sugar, coffee, tobacco, cotton, macadamia nuts and oranges amongst other agricultural produce.
