Govt clarifies progress at Mbudzi Interchange

In a recent update, the Government addressed concerns surrounding the utilization of funds at the Mbudzi Interchange project.

Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Honourable Felix Mhona shed light on the ongoing developments during a tour of the site today, emphasizing the purpose of the visit and meetings with stakeholders to inform the public about the project's current status.

Minister Mhona indicated that his ministry was committed to transparency, hence the need to inform members of the public on the progress of Mbudzi interchange.

“The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development is committed to transparency, aiming to keep the public informed about various projects. The ministry`s mandate is also to showcase President Emmerson Mnangagwa's efforts in infrastructure development. In that regard, I therefore, commend the Second Republic for resource mobilization beyond conventional methods to enhance road accessibility,” stressed Minister Mhona.

Addressing delays in the implementation of the project, Minister Mhona dismissed allegations of embezzlement, affirming the Ministry's zero-tolerance to fraud. He further stated that any instances of misconduct were subject to investigation and legal action. He expressed satisfaction that some issues were already before the courts, awaiting deliberations.

Regarding project timelines, Minister Mhona acknowledged challenges, including property compensations, but expressed determination to surpass the initial March target, setting a personal goal for completion before the official deadline of July 31. He also outlined plans for additional projects, such as the VVIP pavilion mini airport and roads to the RGMI International airport and parliament.

Minister Mhona assured the public of the Government's commitment to completing key roads, including the Harare-Beitbridge and Harare-Victoria Falls routes, with attention to other roads in Bulawayo province. Acknowledging the enormity of the task, he emphasized the need for public support, urging patience and understanding.

With regards to the USD 88 million budget, Minister Mhona provided insight into its allocation, emphasizing the visible work needed for project completion. He called out critics, noting that all contractors involved are Zimbabweans, highlighting the collective effort towards national development.

To date, USD 45 million has been utilized from the allocated USD 88 million, marking progress in the Mbudzi Interchange project.
