Harare Mayor, Jacob Mafume, expressed profound appreciation for Zimbabwe and Africa's liberation history on his tour of the Museum of African Liberation and Liberation City today.
Addressing journalists at the museum, Mayor Mafume emphasised the importance of acknowledging and understanding the nation's past to avoid repeating its painful chapters.
"Our history is a repository of invaluable lessons. It is crucial that we reflect on it, learn from it, and ensure a brighter future," he remarked.
Mafume underscored the significance of honouring the sacrifices made by previous generations.
"We stand on the shoulders of those who came before us. Their sacrifices paved the way for our present. It's incumbent upon us to preserve their memory," he added.
The Museum of African Liberation, in conjunction with Liberation City, a forthcoming tourist destination comprising a game park, liberation mall, and heritage village, aims to enrich both the local community and the nation as a whole.
Mafume hailed this initiative as a catalyst for development and a testament to Harare's pivotal role in the liberation struggles across Africa.
"Harare played a pivotal role in the liberation wars of South Africa and other African nations. The establishment of Liberation City underscores our commitment to commemorating our shared history and promoting tourism, which will ultimately enhance the quality of life for our citizens," Mayor Mafume elaborated.
Echoing Mafume's sentiments, Ward 2 Sunningdale Constituency Councillor, Blessing Muroiwa, emphasised the educational significance of the museum and its potential to enlighten future generations.
"The museum's construction signifies a crucial step in preserving and disseminating the history of Zimbabwe's liberation struggle and its resonance throughout Africa," Muroiwa stated.
He further highlighted the museum's potential to foster connections with other African countries, noting the anticipated interest from visitors across the continent eager to delve into Zimbabwe's historical narrative.
The Museum of African Liberation and Liberation City is poised to serve as a unifying symbol, showcasing Africa's rich heritage and serving as a lucrative tourist hub for Zimbabwe.
