Youth urged to shun political violence

Vice President Constantino Chiwenga urged the youth to desist from participating in political violence ahead of the 2023 Harmonized General Elections.

VP Chiwenga made the remarks at a fundraising dinner and dance for Roman Catholic youths in Mutare. The dinner dance was organized to raise funds for the youth who are set to attend the World Youth Day in Portugal.

"Let me hasten to remind you that this year Zimbabwe will be holding harmonised elections. May I bring to your attention, especially young people here present, and the rest of the country, not to be used by some misguided politicians to engage in violence for the political mileage of unscrupulous politicians.

“We boldly say no, no, no to political violence. Peace, love unity and harmony is what we desire. Let us work together with the church and the state in promoting peace, peace, peace. Peace begins with me; peace begins with you and peace begins with all of us. Don’t be used," said VP Chiwenga.

VP Chiwenga went on to discourage youths from using harmful drugs and to exploit their visit to Portugal as a stepping stone for their social and spiritual growth. He further gave church leaders the responsibility to engage the youth and help them shun drugs.

"I therefore, urge the young people from Mutare who will be participating in this international gathering to use this opportunity as a stepping stone for their own spiritual and social growth. Exposure is vital, especially for you, young people.

“We cannot afford as a church and as a nation to tolerate this misdirected and self-destructive behaviour. I, therefore, call upon all those who work with our young people, be it in the church, to engage rigorously with the young people in trying to help them shun drugs that destroy the lives of scores of young people," said VP Chiwenga.

Meanwhile, ZANU-PF is engaging and encouraging youths to register to vote in the Party's drive to attain 5 million votes in the upcoming presidential elections. The visit by VP Chiwenga at this occasion also shows the symbiotic relationship that exists between the church and the Government.
